Background: Kaohsiung Opto-Electronics Inc.

Kaohsiung Opto-Electronics (KOE), a wholly owned subsidiary of Japan Display Inc (JDI), was formed in 2012 to advance the design, development and manufacture of market leading TFT LCD display modules previously established by Hitachi.

KOE is justifiably proud of inheriting an established LCD heritage. Over 35 years ago, as an early pioneer of LCD technology, Hitachi developed and produced simple character and dot matrix displays. More recently the development and introduction of in-plane-switching (IPS) wide viewing angle technology reiterated Hitachi’s commitment to providing display excellence. Continued investment in R&D will ensure that KOE stays at the forefront of evolving and ground breaking LCD technology.

KOE has its own dedicated manufacturing and production facilities in Taiwan. In house design, production and procurement of key components such as LCD glass, colour filters, LCD drivers and backlights, allows KOE to provide continual enhancement to an extensive range of high quality and performance optimised display solutions. KOE will maintain a renowned Japanese dedication for the design and manufacture of high quality products.

Japan Display Inc (JDI) was formed by the merger of the small and medium size LCD panel businesses of Hitachi, Sony and Toshiba in conjunction with the Innovation Network Corporation of Japan (INCJ). INCJ has invested $2.6 billion and with a stake of 70% is the largest shareholder in Japan Display Inc. The new business has extensive fabrication facilities in Japan and commences operations in the spring of 2012. Japan Display Inc is expected to be the world’s largest small and medium size LCD manufacturer and will produce displays for mobile phones, tablet computers, automotive and medical equipment.
